BDMPC History
The story of Bohol Diocesan Multi-Purpose Cooperative (BDMPC) began with the vision of creating a cooperative that would serve the community, inspired by the leadership of the late Bishop Onesimo Gordoncillo, DD, the then Bishop of Tagbilaran. The cooperative's origins trace back to the merging of two distinct entities—Bohol Diocesan Consumers Cooperative, Inc. (BDCCI) and Bohol Catholic Schools Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Inc. (BCSMPCI). These two cooperatives, though founded separately, shared a common goal: to provide services that would uplift the members of the Catholic community and those associated with religious organizations.
BDCCI was the first of the two cooperatives to be established, founded in July 1982 by Bishop Gordoncillo. It started with a modest group of 45 members and a paid-up capital of P14,700. Initially, its membership was composed of diocesan clergy and priests, as well as lay personnel of the Diocese of Tagbilaran. Over time, BDCCI expanded its reach to include the brothers and sisters of co-op members and those belonging to mandated religious organizations. This inclusive model helped to create a broad and supportive community that shared the cooperative’s goals of mutual assistance and empowerment.
Four years later, in July 1986, BCSMPCI was formed, also under the guidance of Bishop Gordoncillo. With an initial paid-up capital of just P8,272.45, it began with 47 pioneer members, consisting primarily of teaching and non-teaching personnel from the Bohol Association of Catholic Schools (BACS). Like BDCCI, BCSMPCI soon expanded its membership to include the families of members and others from religious organizations. Over the years, both cooperatives worked independently to serve their respective communities, yet their missions were closely aligned.
On April 15, 1994, a pivotal moment in the history of these two cooperatives occurred. After years of working side by side, BDCCI and BCSMPCI merged to form Bohol Diocesan Multi-Purpose Cooperative (BDMPC), a cooperative that combined the strengths, resources, and memberships of the original organizations. The first consolidated general assembly was held on this date, marking the beginning of BDMPC as a unified entity dedicated to serving its members with expanded services and greater impact.
The legacy of Bishop Gordoncillo, who had laid the foundation for both BDCCI and BCSMPCI, lives on in BDMPC’s continued growth and commitment to serving its members. Under his guidance, these cooperatives were not merely financial entities but also spaces of collaboration, service, and community building. His vision for a cooperative that would empower individuals and strengthen the bonds of the Catholic community has remained the driving force behind BDMPC’s ongoing success.
Since its inception, BDMPC has grown into a thriving cooperative that offers a wide range of services to its members. It has become a trusted partner in helping individuals and families achieve financial stability, with credit services, savings programs, and insurance options designed to meet their diverse needs.
As the years go by, the cooperative has also expanded its operations into various business ventures, all aimed at supporting the local economy and providing essential services to its members. From its humble beginnings, BDMPC now operates a consumer store, a gasoline station, and a water refilling station, each offering quality services at affordable prices. These ventures are a testament to the cooperative’s commitment to economic empowerment and community development.
Perhaps one of the most significant contributions of BDMPC has been the establishment of its Coop Funeral Homes. Providing compassionate and dignified services to families in their most difficult times, the funeral homes have earned a reputation for professionalism and respect. This service reflects the cooperative’s core values of empathy, integrity, and care for the community – thus gives meaningful rays of our tagline, “Services Go Beyond Life…”
Throughout its history, BDMPC has remained steadfast in its commitment to its members and the community at large. As the cooperative continues to grow, it remains deeply rooted in its mission of fostering financial independence and social responsibility. The cooperative model, which ensures that profits are reinvested into services that directly benefit members, has made BDMPC an essential institution in the lives of its members.
The journey of BDMPC, from its humble beginnings in a small room at St. Joseph Cathedral to its current position as a leading cooperative in the region, is a testament to the power of collaboration and the strength of community. Today, BDMPC stands as a symbol of what can be accomplished when people come together with a shared vision of mutual aid and empowerment.
